Diving Procedures
- Our pool depth and block height are in compliance with Atlanta Swim Association (our governing body who organizes our league) and USA Swimming for competition
- Having blocks installed and available for use is required by Atlanta Swim Association for us to have a team. If we don’t have blocks at our meets, then we cannot have a team.
- Swimmers are not required to dive from the blocks at our pool or any other pool. The blocks are available as an option, but diving from the side of the pool or in the water are other available options.
- There will be no pressure from coaching staff to dive from the blocks or the side during meets or practices if the parents want to opt out.
- Flip turns at either end of the pool are not required for any swimmer in a meet or at practices.
- If a family decides that they would prefer their swimmer to start from the side of the pool or in the water, then we will have a marker on the heat sheets so deck managers and timers can have the swimmer start in the specified way. Coaches will be informed of the preferred method of entry to implement this at practices.
- The only type of dives taught and practiced in competitive swimming are shallow dives. The goal of a dive is to achieve maximum distance from the blocks, not maximum depth. Deep dives are a hindrance to racing and are not safe, so they are never taught or encouraged!
- We use USA swimming’s 5 step diving progression to teach diving. Swimmers must successfully complete this progression before they can dive off the blocks.
- This diving progression will be taught under supervision by our coaches in 6 feet of water.
- The CRC Pool Rules, such as no diving, do not apply to the swim team. The presence of our coaches on deck fulfills the obligation in the pool rules to have a responsible adult present with children aged 13 and under.
- For added safety, we always have a certified lifeguard on deck during our practices and at swim meets.
- Parents are allowed to attend any and all practices and are encouraged to do so if they are able.
- Coach Lauren is USA swimming certified coach who currently coaches at a club team. All of our assistant coaches go through coaching education and certification through Atlanta Swim Association. Learn more about our amazing group of coaches here https://crcstingrays.swimtopia.com/coaches
- For the past two seasons our team held a dive clinic with an Olympic swimmer and several USA swimming coaches on deck to teach safe and efficient diving to all age groups (excluding Mini Rays). We are working on details to set up another dive clinic this summer. We will share more information about this as it becomes available.
- Numerous other pools in our county and within our league of many thousand swimmers dive at the same depth as our pool. This includes the largest and third largest teams in the county. Also, Cumming Aquatic Center has a 4 foot depth at one end where swimmers dive for the start of 50m races.
